What is Low Vision?

Low Vision is an eye condition characterized by severe visual impairment — typically caused by an injury, eye disease, or genetics — that diminishes or eliminates your ability to do the activities you want to do.

Those with low vision can experience the following:

  • Tunnel vision/visual field loss (inability to see well in the periphery — including blind spots)
  • Legal blindness (visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better eye) or a field of view limited to 20 degrees or less

Glasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery cannot fully correct Low Vision.

What is a Low Vision Doctor?

A Low Vision doctor is an IALVS (International Academy of Low Vision Specialists) optometrist that is specifically trained in using proven and effective methods to help patients regain their functional vision after vision loss.

Low vision eye doctors provide the patient with custom vision aids, innovative medical devices and customized optical devices to maximize the use of their remaining vision in the most effective way possible. This enables them to regain the ability to perform everyday tasks and reclaim their independence.
